Katie Johnson Pursues Dream of Nursing

EUGENE, Ore. – In a remarkable display of dedication and perseverance, recent Bushnell University graduate Katie Johnson ’23 not only clinched the top spot in Bushnell’s Fall 2023 ACE Day poster presentation, but she has also conquered a series of obstacles on her journey to becoming a registered nurse.

Johnson’s passion for nursing began during her high school years, leading her to venture into the healthcare field. Since beginning this journey, she has served as an EMT, CNA, LPN, and combat medic, acquiring a diverse skill set in various medical settings. Despite her extensive experience and determination, the path to obtaining her RN license seemed elusive, with repeated roadblocks hindering her progress.

Undeterred, Johnson continued to pursue her dream and, in 2021, discovered Bushnell University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program. The catch: she lacked a bachelor’s degree, prompting her to enroll in the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) degree program. This journey reached a triumphant conclusion in December 2023 when she proudly graduated.

Now, equipped with her IDS degree, Johnson’s persistence has opened the doors to her next chapter. In January 2024, she was admitted into the ABSN program, marking a significant milestone in her quest to become a registered nurse. As she looks forward to this new phase, Johnson reflects on her journey: “A dear colleague/friend from the VA gave me a gift for Christmas that said, “She believed she could, so she did.” I thought it was such a sweet gift.  I think what is more important to me is that God opened this door and I’m very grateful.  In Zechariah 4:10, it says not to despise small beginnings.  Caring for people is God’s calling on my life and I’m thankful for him providing a way for me to do that. I always say whatever you do, don’t give up.  It doesn’t matter how small the step forward is.  One day you will look back and see how far you have come.”

Johnson’s story not only highlights her individual accomplishments but also underscores the pivotal role of programs like the ABSN in providing opportunities for determined individuals to overcome challenges and realize their aspirations in the healthcare field.
