Shelly Hartzell and Wendy Alexander Receive President’s Award

EUGENE, Ore. – Bushnell University president Dr. Joseph D. Womack honored two outstanding individuals during Bushnell’s 2025 Spring Commencement for their exceptional dedication, achievements, and contributions to the university community. The President’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership and the award for Exemplary Staff and Campus Leadership are presented annually. New this year, the awards were given in collaboration with the Associated Students of Bushnell University and the Office of the President.

Nominated by faculty, staff, and students, accounting professor Shelly Hartzell, M.S.M., CPA, CMA, was awarded the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership, while Wendy Alexander, Office Manager for Athletics, received the President’s Award for Exemplary Staff Performance and Campus Leadership.

Hartzell brings over 20 years of accounting experience to Bushnell as Associate Professor of Accounting. She has worked to develop innovative programs in the School of Business, Leadership, and Technology and to grow the accounting program enrollment. She is known for integrating faith and ethics into her teaching, making accounting accessible to all learners, and mentoring students with care and purpose.

“This year’s recipient for Teaching Excellence, Professor Shelly Hartzell, goes beyond the classroom by creating meaningful off-campus opportunities that expand and integrate her students’ understanding of accounting,” says Matthew Wilhite, 2024–25 president of the Associated Students of Bushnell University. “She is deeply committed to preparing her students for every aspect of life, meeting them where they are with patience and care. Shelly’s calm and steady character, reflecting the spirit of Jesus, makes a lasting impact on everyone she teaches.”

Alexander supports the athletics department’s daily operations, coordinating programs and events that enhance the student-athlete experience and strengthen campus culture. Through a spirit of service, she fosters a welcoming environment where students and colleagues feel supported and seen.

“Wendy Alexander, the Exemplary Staff Award recipient, has a work ethic and integrity that directly impacts her department’s fruitfulness. She has a deep care for others to discern the call God has on their lives, exemplifying servant leadership and what it means to show wisdom, faith, and service,” Wilhite shares.

Both Hartzell and Alexander are integral to the campus community, and Bushnell applauds them for their dedicated leadership and continual professionalism.
